A grant of £20,000 over two years was approved to run the Appropriate Adult Project. This supports people with mental health and learning difficulties, and in particular ensures that where an individual with mental health or learning difficulties requires an ‘appropriate adult’ to be present, for example, following detention at a police station, a volunteer is available as a result of this grant. Volunteers have provided cover from 0700 to 2400 seven days a week providing 96% coverage to police stations and also to HM Customs and Excise.
This grant enabled the co-coordinator to concentrate on training, recruiting and supporting volunteers on whom the scheme depends. Without funding from HCT the scheme would have ended. During its second year, 221 callouts were dealt with by volunteer appropriate adults, amounting to man hours (plus travelling time). The scheme had 14 volunteers with 2 volunteers awaiting training in its second year.
216 people benefited from the project over its two years, of whom 96% were from the six wards. These were aged 17 and above. |
