Growing plans for Harmondsworth Primary School
Pupils at Harmondsworth Primary School will be able to grown their own food in a new greenhouse and growing area funded by Hillingdon Community Trust.
The new facility, which was funded by a £22,000 grant from the Trust, was opened on Monday 8th June 2009 by the Mayor of Hillingdon, Cllr Shirley Harper O'Neill and David Brough, Chairman of Hillingdon Community Trust. Head of Harmondsworth Primary School, Eleesa Godfrey, commented, 'Harmondsworth Primary School is accredited as a 'Healthy School' and we have developed a policy to ensure that healthy eating is promoted within our school. As part of that policy, we wanted to develop an area where the children can grow and care for plants all year round, and this new atrium means we can do that. It's already proving very popular with the children and with teachers. As well as learning about eating healthily, the new atrium will allow us to teach many areas of the curriculum in an exciting way. All of the children learn about science and plants and the atrium will be used to enhance our lessons about the environment.'
Children at the school have started putting their skills to good use by starting a gardening club with the help of parents and grandparents.
David Brough, Chairman of Hillingdon Community Trust, commented, 'The Trust is keen to improve the health and wellbeing of residents in the Trust area and projects like this can have very positive benefits not only on children who will learn about growing a wide range of foods and about eating healthily, but also on the wider community. The Trust is very pleased to have been able to fund this fantastic new facility and we are delighted it is enriching the education of children at Harmondsworth Primary.'
