Alzheimers Society cafe in its third year
Harrow and Hillingdon branch of the Alzheimer’s Society, received a grant of £30,000 from Hillingdon Community Trust in February 2004 towards the provision of a respite café in Hayes for those with dementia and their carers to give them an opportunity to access the services of the Alzheimer’s Society
and to gain support, information, advice and social activity. The café is held on a Friday morning at Hayes and Harlington Community Centre. 44 different families have attended over the last year, with an average of 19 people at the café each week. The café is highly valued by its users, and its popularity has grown during the last two years. Comments received from users include: "I have gained new friends who I can discuss my concerns with
and get advice, as we are all in the same boat as carers. My mum
loves coming every week; it’s a great place to be part of." "Everyone is helpful and makes us feel we are not on our own." "Hayes café is very important in our lives. My husband enjoys
it from the moment we arrive – greeting his friends, the music,
dancing, singing and playing quoits. This has really made a real difference to our lives." |
